Talent Show = Awesome!

This summer we went to KC for a soccer tournament, while there we stayed with my brother and sister in law. On Sunday the boys asked if Griff’s little could come to their game and then over to the house to hang out when their games were finished. During the afternoon, I, Griff’s little, danced and my boys watched. I didn’t think much of it, until Thanksgiving, e asked if he could put on a show for the family. I asked what he planned to do and he said dance.

Interesting. To what would he dance? Where had he learned to dance? And the real question – did he get my skills or his dad’s? Remember, I am quite fond of hosting family room dance parties, complete with glow sticks and a disco ball.

The family gathered, I plugged in his iPod and was amazed. The kid has some moves. He watched I in KC, came home and has been dancing in the garage to hip-hop stations on Pandora.

We love being part of a smaller neighborhood school. It feels like a family and the kids support each other and have relationships with teachers in different grade levels and the principals. The boys have both shared on different occasions that it just feels good to be a part of Team Baker.

Before Christmas break they held auditions for the talent show. My boys are both very athletically gifted and can play a mean beat on the djembe, but as far as “talent” as you would expect in the typical elementary school talent show, well I figured they would want to attend, not audition.
WRONG!
“Mom, I want to try out for the talent show” e said to me one day after school. “What are you going to do? We can’t bring a soccer field to the stage,” I replied. “I want to dance.” “You want to what?” “Dance, momma. I want to dance.”

I launched into an entire protect your little heart, speech about how I’m proud of him for wanting to try, but not all the kids are chosen, blah, blah, blah. Then I found the clean version of BEP’s Boom Boom Pow and took him to his audition. I maybe shed a tear as I watched him tryout, trying to figure out how to protect his little heart from not being chosen.  A speech I would not have to give.

Not only chosen, but a highlight of the show! My kiddo, the one that the girls were apparently talking about all week according to one of his teachers, stepped out his box and last night was a dancer!

After the show was finished, we were asked by a number of parents & teachers where he took dance classes. I smiled and told them I’m his teacher. OK, no I really didn’t say that. I told them that he watched a friend dance for about 3 minutes on a trip to KC and has been dancing in the garage (& at my invitation only, family room dance parties) since.
I was the proudest momma on the planet last night & as he popped and locked, I cried & said a prayer of thanksgiving.
God, for all you have created in e and letting me call him my son, thank you. Amen
