a little more about memphis
What a fun weekend in Memphis for the St. Jude 1/2 Marathon. For me it ended up being more about time with my daddy than running and was exactly what I needed. I really have a new appreciation for his affection for St. Jude and the work he does all year to raise awareness and funds to help save the lives of children who are patients there. The dinner the night before the race was inspirational and running through the campus of the hospital and past Target house leaves me at a loss for words.
Pops had a fantastic run, just a couple of minutes off his PR that he set 5 years ago and he felt great. No hip aches and although he didn't hit the dance floor with me that evening I know his legs could have handled it. My run on the other hand, was just okay. I've run a 1/2 each month since August and am going to take a few months off. It looks like Little Rock in March will be the next.
We ate really fantastic breakfast at Brother Jupiters & The Arcade. I think my dad is a believer in Yelp! after those meals. Although I make them often, I only eat pancakes a few times a year. Just not one of my favorite things. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of syrup, I don't know, but Sunday was not only a pancake kinda morning, but syrup too. You should probably make a trip to Memphis simply to eat and one of the things you need to eat are the sweet potato pancakes from the Arcade. Ohmigoodness...and how could you go to Memphis and spend an evening on Beale Street and not eat ribs? You can't, so we did. Messy, fall off the bone, BBQ ribs while we listened to Carl Drew wrap up his set and danced* to Will Tucker at the BB Kings Blues Club.
I always seem to meet interesting people when I travel, because I simply can't stay in a hotel room and watch television. So I don't. I met a handful of runners, those who run in Newtons. Had quite an interesting conversation with a couple of business people from California, while having coffee at the Peabody which was followed by an invitation to come visit. (I'll pass.) The most delightful person I met was a woman who had a contagious smile & spirit. I sat next to her and her friends at BB's. We visited and danced, laughed and shared stories. When I'm going through St. Louis, I certainly will give her a call and we will have coffee.
The weekend was a 10 in more ways than one. Thanks daddy for taking me along. Can I sign up for next year? If so, I'm in.
*For the record I was the only one who hit the dance floor. Tried like crazy to get pops to dance, but it wasn't happening.
